IP address 169.254.x.x with Linksys Router Needing to be Reset
By Internet Handholding @ 4:17 PM :: 1892 Views :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Networking

When your computer has trouble connecting to the network, check the IP address.

Open up a command prompt. On Vista go to Start and enter cmd in the search field. On XP go to Start, Run and enter cmd. At the command prompt, enter.

ipconfig /all

Look for your computer's IP address. Look for a line like this.

IPv4 Address: 169.154.x.x

If your IP address is of the form 169.254.x.x then your computer is not connecting to the network. This is the IP address your computer assigns itself if the network does not assign one.

There are lots of potential causes of this problem. The case that prompted this entry was this. I moved a LInksys router from one office to another. In the second office, this problem occurred. On the back of the Linksys router is a tiny reset button. Pressing this button (with the tip of a pen) causes the router to be reset to its factory settings. After doing this, everything worked, but I did need to reconfigure the router.

To configure the router, in an internet browser go to 192.168.0.254. The factory default username and password for this Linksys router is admin and admin.
