How Blog Pinging Works

Philip

Here is my understanding of how pinging works with a blog.

The idea behind blog pinging is to improve search engine exposure. Search engines like blogs because of frequent updates to content. That's why they spider blogs more frequently than a static website.

When you update a blog, you want to send a ping to a bunch of special blog directories. These directories keep track of blogs and maintain a list of last update timestamps.

The major search engines visit these sites on a daily basis and check to see which blogs have updated content. The search engine then goes directly to the blog to index the page.

This is much quicker than Google spidering every site hoping to find current content. Google will still hit all blogs eventually in their normal spidering schedle. But, these special blog directories or servers make the job easy.

The problem is that everyone has their own proprietary technology. The directories compete with each other and they have no interest in developing a common standard. That's the reason that ping services like ping-o-matic have become so popular. They interface with the most popular proprietary formats.

By pinging just ping-o-matic you can be certain of getting your ping relayed to 90% of the popular blog directories.

Google also has its own blog pinger service.
