USB Drive Letter Changes
By Internet Handholding @ 9:19 AM :: 1017 Views :: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: Windows

The issue is when plugging in a USB drive, the drive letter changes.

You may have multiple external hard drives that you use for backup. Your backup program may be programmed to backup to drive E. When you swap drives, the new drive is assigned F and now your backup will not work.

Go to Start, Run and enter compmgmt.msc

You can also navigate from your Start menu or Control Panel to Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management

Right click on the drive, click Change Drive Letter and Paths, click the Change button, select the desired drive letter and click OK.

This simple solution may not be a permanent solution.

The free program USBDLM appears to provide some useful tools, but I have not tried it. There also appears to be good technical information on the site.
