Windows 7 Home Premium vs Professional vs Ultimate
By Internet Handholding @ 12:32 AM :: 1200 Views :: 2 Comments :: Article Rating :: Windows

I bought a new Dell computer today which came with Windows 7 Home Premium and read a little to see whether I need to upgrade. I do.

For normal consumers, which is you unless you know otherwise, there are only two choices: Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional.

Windows 7 Ultimate is for corporate users who do not have an enterprise license. If some big corporation told you to buy Ultimate, then you need it. Otherwise you do not. Ultimate's extra features have to do with connecting to corporate networks.

If you are a programmer or web developer and you need IIS (Internet Information Server - Microsoft's web server) installed on your computer, then you need Professional.

Otherwise, run with the Premium edition until you find there is a feature in the Professional edition you must have (for $89).

Actually, you can run IIS on Windows 7 Home Premium. You need the higher versions for XP Mode, though.

Bummer, I wasted $90. Thanks for the correction. Here are Microsoft's instructions for installing IIS.

There seems to be almost no reason to upgrade to Professional unless you need XP Mode or want to use Microsoft backup over a network.

So far, I have had no reason to use XP Mode. Every program I wanted to use ran in Windows 7 or there was a newer version that I was able to download for free that worked.

To anyone considering an upgrade, do not waste your money and time. Wait until there is there is a feature that you need that you do not have, before upgrading.
