More links to your website seem to be a good thing, if you want more visitors. More visitors generally mean more sales.
The more ways for people to find you, the better. People do click on those links. You may only get an occassional visitor from each link, but if you have thousands of links, that could be a fair number of occassional visitors. If your website is one that people come back to, you can build brand recognition, repeat visitors and word-of-mouth visitors from those occassional visitors.
Search engines, and specifically Google, tend to rank you higher if you have more incoming links, also called back links. The closer you are to the top of page 1, the more visitors you will get.
Getting those backlinks can be a lot of work. For competitive keywords, and even mildly popular keywords are highly competitive, you need to do a lot, lot, lot, ...., lot, lot more than you think.
There are a number of services that automate the process of getting back links. They generate so many links, that you cannot do the same by hand.
Here are some links to Automated Article Submission, Back Linking and Traffic Generation services.
