Your new Dell computer may have come with Dell DataSafe Local Backup and Dell DataSafe Online.
On my computer Dell DataSafe Local Backup gave me this error.
Dell DataSafe Local Backup has not been able to detect the Recovery Partition on this computer. It may be missing or corrupted.
To recover your computer to the original factory state and restore the Recovery Partition, please use your System Recovery Discs.
If this happened to you, reboot your computer, press F8 right away so you get the advanced startup menu.
If the first option is Restore Your System, then you do have the Recovery Partition. Do not worry about the message.
If you want to create System Recovery Discs, go to your Start menu and in Windows 7 search for Create System and select Create a System Recovery Disc.
Backup Your Computer
Backing up your computer is a good idea, both local and online backup.
Try using Windows Live Mesh for online, real time, local backup, which is free for 5 gigabytes, and forget Dell DataSafe Online.
Should you use Dell DataSafe Local Backup?
Dell DataSafe Local Backup backs up your data to your local hard drive in a separate partition from your main partition.
That means your data is backed up on the same hard drive where your data is. This is not good if your hard drive fails.
Your local backup should be on another hard drive. Recommend you use a few external hard drives, so you can rotate them and store them at other locations.
Stop Dell DataSafe
These two Dell DataSafe programs might start automatically on your computer. They did on mine. If they are in your system tray, you want to stop them. Right click on each and click Exit, if you can find that option. If you cannot permanently stop them that way, go to your Start menu and run MSCONFIG.EXE.
Click the Startup tab. You can then Disable the Dell Datasafe programs. While you are there, Disable the rest of the programs unless you know you want to start. If stopping a program causes a problem you can always start it again.

Is there a way to disable the local Datasafe process without killing the online version? It seems ridiculous to perform any backup operations if the files are not being stored on a separate device.

Hello Seth, I do not use the Dell online backup, so I cannot test this. When I go into Task Manager, Processes, I see two processes: one is DataSafe Update Launcher and one is Dell DataSafe Local Backup. If you are using Dell online backup, see what other Dell processes you might have running. You then might be able to kill one or both of the one's I listed above. Your comment seems reasonable, unless the Dell DataSafe Local Backup provides services to the online backup process, in which case DataSafe Local would need to be running. Also note that I had written you could stop the Dell DataSafe from starting by turning it off in MSCONFIG.EXE. Have not investigated why, but that has stopped working for me. Dell DataSafe starts on my computer even when I turned it off in MSCONFIG. One more thought, I use Windows Live Mesh (Sync) for backing up my current data online. Wrote an article on it here. www.internethandholding.com/Articles/tabid/153/Internet_Marketing/191/Windows-Live-Mesh-for-Automated-Real-Time-Backup-and-Synchronization.aspx Windows has made some changes to their service, but if you sign up for a free Live account and go to their Mesh or Sync service, you should be able to set it up. Good luck, Andrew

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium with Dell DataSafe Local Backup Installed. I had a rootkit virus a few days ago and decided to restore my system to its factory state. At that point I created a full backup of all my audio, image and video files. On rebooting the restored laptop, I found that there were huge gaps in the archive numbers and therefore manually numbered them wherever necessary. This was done because on trying to recover data from the backup with the original archive numbers in place, the system kept stating there were missing archive numbers. The backup was a success and I stopped it halfway thinking i'd do it later. I also made a copy of these backed up files on an external HD However, the rootkit virus had ruined my system and I gave it to the pros to clean up, which they did. On trying to recover my data again, however (there was no data loss when the pros cleaned up the system) I was unable to recover my data since I received an 'archive is empty or corrupted' message which meant the restore was not possible. Also, it kept asking for archive numbers that weren't present. Could you please advise me on how to recover my data? Thanks

Hello Gautam, Am not sure I understand your situation exactly. Did you use Windows backup? If so, believe Windows stores the files as zip files. Instead of using Restore, right click on your backup and select Open in New Window. You should then be able to navigate through each folder to your files. You should be able to unzip the files by dragging them to another folder on your hard drive. Good luck, Andrew

Hi Andrew, With reference to the above, No, I didn't use Windows Backup. I used the backup software provided by Dell (DataSafe Local Backup). It categorised files into archives, which in the beginning were numbered, but with breaks in between. (Eg. 1-9, and then 12-20 with no archive numbers 10 and 11). I had to re-number them in order to unpack them. What the DataSafe Local Backup does on ordering it to unpack files is unpack them in order of archive numbers. If archive numbers are absent, it requests the missing archive and doesn't proceed with the unpacking unless provided said archive, which is why I had to renumber them as mentioned above. However, like I said before, the data claimed to be corrupted/empty when I tried to unpack it AFTER restoring my PC to its factory state. Can you please advise me on this? I'm a journalist and have all my data (images, videos and sounds) on it. Thanks

Hi Gautam, Sorry, I just saw your comment today. Hope you have found a solution by now. Your situation is does not sound good. Maybe try leaving 12-20 as is. Maybe you can get a 10 and 11 from another computer and copy them to yours to fill in the gaps. For anyone else reading this, let that be a warning to you, make multiple, frequent, automated backups, with at least some offsite. You can use Windows Live Mesh for free. You can use Carbonite for $60 a year. Every month or so, do a full copy of all your data to an external hard drive and take it to a friend or relatives. Don't trust any one process to backup your data. Be wise, Andrew

Sorry Marco, I could not find an answer to your question. Seems like it should be doable. If you could find someone with the same machine, you might be able to make an image from their computer.

Hello, i have a Dell XpsL702X which came with dell datasafe local backup on it, i haven't created any recovery disks and at one point i had to reinstall my windows because it wouldn't start anymore. i got a bootlegged windows 7 disk from a friend and installed it, i didn't worry about dell datasafe because there was nothing on that partition at the time that i needed. then after a while i wanted to create recovery media but i couldn't because of that copy of windows wasn't genuine so i installed back my own and after a fresh install i was finally able to run datasafe local backup and wanted to create recovery disks. i got the same message as the first person who posted on this forum, specifically: ''Dell DataSafe Local Backup has not been able to detect the Recovery Partition on this computer. It may be missing or corrupted. To recover your computer to the original factory state and restore the Recovery Partition, please use your System Recovery Discs.'' I checked all my partitions with windows7 disk management tool and i still have a recovery partition, my question is how do i get dell datasafe local backup up and running? do i have to delete the old recovery partition and create a new one or how does this exactly work, does anyone know?

Dell DataSafe Local Backup is useless to me too on a new Dell laptop. The program just crashes with errors when it starts, says it can't detect the recovery partition, and doesn't give me any options to back up to disc or usb. I can't even uninstall it to reinstall the app! The recovery partition exists but apparently the guys at Dell who built this thing didn't QC the machine before shipping it.

I have a Dell Inspiron One 2305. It did not come with Dell DataSafe Local Backup. Tech at Dell told me to download it. Did and tried to install. But while installing I get this. "Dell DataSafe Local Backup cannot be installed because your hard drive does not have the Windows Recovery Environment". It does have the recovery partition.
